CRISIS Hotline

SCARED? FEELING ALONE? DO YOU need help? Sault Area Hospital offers a free and confidential crisis hotline 1-800721-0077, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

This service is provided for those 16 years and older and consists of a team of crisis intervention workers and a mobile crisis response team who provide assistance for those in crisis and their family members.

Algoma Family Services

ALGOMA FAMILY SERVICES is a confidential child, adolescent and family counselling service that is available to residents of Wawa, Missanabie, Dubreuilville and White River on a voluntary basis and free of charge. The counsellors offer individual, family and group counselling to children, teens and their families who may be experiencing difficulties with discipline, feelings and behaviour.
The counsellors travel weekly to White River and Dubreuilville and as needed to Missanabie.

Iris Place

Screen Shot 2015-09-21 at 5.57.23 AMDeb Lessard hosts Iris Place, a drop-in centre for individuals with mental health and addiction issues from Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. She provides recreational and social activities, peer support services, and transportation to medical appointments. Debby also provides a daily hot lunch between 12 noon and 1:30 p.m. Iris Place is located at 6 Broadway Avenue, 705-856-1894.

 

Canadian Red Cross – Wawa

Offers support for international and national relief efforts and delivers local community-based programs that help vulnerable people in Canada and around the world. Locally, the Red Cross provides

  • Meals on Wheels
  • In home support services
  • Home maintenance/Repair (yard work/lawn care and snow removal for seniors)
  • Personal Support Workers
  • first aid and CPR training services
  • escort to medical appointments and errands

Wawa Goose Senior’s Club – Drop In Centre

Wawa has an active senior’s club open weekdays from 1 – 4:30 at 63 Broadway Avenue (nestled between Canada Brokerlink and The Barber. They host:

  • card games
  • blood pressure clinics,

and many social events throughout the year.

 

Algoma Family Services

Provides a range of evidence-based, best practice mental health services for children and youth and their families.  They focus on the following key areas:

Algoma District Social Services

is administered by Algoma District Services Administration Board (ADSAB). They provide direct access to Federal, Provincial and local social services. Their office is located at 50 Broadway Avenue, 705-856-2303.

Best Start Hub

Best Start Hubs offer a mix of services to families. Children and parents can participate in early learning programs such as circle time and creative activities, literacy programs as well as exploring a variety of play opportunities. Parents can borrow a wide range of resources and participate in workshops. Best Start Hubs are staffed with child development and early years practitioners and volunteers to deliver programs and to support parents and caregivers in finding the information, programs or services they need. The Best Start Hub is located at 66 Broadway Avenue, 705-856-7354.

  • Informal workshops are offered weekly
  • Lunch & Learn Workshops are held September to June, Thursdays from 11:00am to 1:00pm featuring special guests. Lunch is provided and childcare is available upon request.
  • “Just for Laughs” is usually held the last Friday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Pre-Natal Drop-In is held Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. & Post-Natal Drop-In is held Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. – 3:30pm.
  • Clothing cupboard is available during our regular hours.

 

Superior Children’s Centre (SCC)

Superior Children’s Centre provides licenced Early Learning and Child Care Programs in Wawa at two formal locations: Superior’s Children Centre located at 41 Algoma Street (English), and Garderie Francophone located at 101 Churchhill Avenue (French). Infant, Toddler, PreSchool and Before & After School, Summer and Flexicare programs are provided at 41 Algoma Street.  Toddler, PreSchool and Before & After School, Summer and Flexicare programs are provided at 101 Churchill Avenue. Superior Children’s Centre also offers homecare opportunities for infant to age 12.
